So many of you might be wondering what a shave oil is and why I should use it in my morning shave routine. I had those same questions when my brother and I decided to start this business 2 years ago. Adam (the other brother in the Davidson Co.) has a big red beard and we initially designed our product to be just a beard oil. But I decided to give it a shot as a pre-shave oil as well. And oh, am I glad I did.
Like every mid-thirties man who hasn't joined the ranks of the bearded, I have shaved almost every day since my twenties (if not before) and will continue to do so until I die. It hasn't been something that I have looked forward to doing everyday; but, I admit I have become a shave enthusiast of sorts as well. But, over the years, I have always felt shaving uncomfortable. I have tried switching from a foam to a gel, then, of course, the brush and soap. I have gone from cartridge razor to a shavette razor, which I really enjoyed until one morning when I flinched. I then went back to the cartridge razor. But, it was still not a pleasant experience. That is, until I started using a pre shave oil.
Since I have started using Kent Place as my preshave oil, I am amazed at how more I enjoy shaving every morning. At this point you might be asking yourself how can a preshave oil make you shave that much better? Here are a few reasons why I am still using one:
- By using the preshave oil first and then adding a good quality shave soap on top after that, the oils create an extra layer of lubrication between your skin and your blade. I have even found that I am able to increase the amount of shaves (days) I can go before I have to change blades.
- The oils that we have chosen as our carrier oils for our products are all meant to help your skin. They are high in moisture retention qualities, they help with acne, ingrown hairs, and eczema.
- After using the oils for awhile, you will notice a big difference on the days that you do not use the oils. I know personally if I don't shave for a few days (long weekend off), and I don't use the oil on my face those days as well, I can feel a big difference when I do eventually shave. In other words, your skin is drier and will begin to crave the oils because they are making your skin healthier.
I have been using a preshave oil for over 2 years now and will never go back to not using one ever again. What are your thoughts on using a pre-shave oils vs not? What other products should we be including in our routines to make shaving more enjoyable? We would love to hear your thoughts.
Until next time,
